BREATHE! An Art Exhibition and Community Conversation

Artist: Sharareh Khosravani

BREATHE! Artists Respond to the Crises of Our Age is an art exhibition and community dialogue that asks the question: How do we recover from the past year, find resilience and breathe again? 

Four artists present their work in video, installation, sculpture, and painting in an exhibition which will be on view in the gallery spaces at the Wave Pool Contemporary Art Fulfillment Center from July 3rd till August 7th, 2021. 

Participating artists include: Erika Nj Allen, Kim Anno, Sharareh Khosravani, and Stephen Slaughter. 

Filmmaker/media artist Andrea Torrice is the guest curator of this exhibition and event.


Opening Night Special Community Event

On Saturday, July 3rd at 6pm, the public is invited to participate in a conversation with local leaders from the health, arts, environment, and social justice communities about the exhibition theme and to share strategies for finding resilience. Guests speakers include: Flavia Bastos, James P. Buchanan, and Renee Mahaffey Harris.

This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.

Artist Bios:
Erika Nj Allen

Erika Nj Allen is a Guatemalan-American multi-media artist who holds a BFA in photography from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She works extensively in photography and ceramics. Her latest body of work symbolizes the resilience, not the struggles, the light, not the darkness, the joy of living, not the nightmares of depression, the evolution and adaptation, not the regression and maladaptation. Kim Anno

Kim Anno is a director and producer, artist, and filmmaker who has screened her work in festivals and exhibited in museums nationally and internationally. She founded Wild Project, a non-profit, whose mission is “to collaborate world-wide through fearless art, film, and performance to inspire resiliency in the face of adversity.” She is currently in post-production on ¡Qubo! a documentary of the LGBTQ movement in Cuba along with films about sea level rise and climate change. Sharareh Khosravani

Sharareh Khosravani is an Iranian-born artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her portfolio includes large installations, sculptures, paintings, interpretive work and book illustrations. Much of her work explores concepts of loss and otherness and invites the viewer to consider the fragility of their own position within a broader social context. Stephen Slaughter

Stephen Slaughter is known for his work as an architect, performance artist, and filmmaker. He is currently teaching in the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning and pursuing research in Southern Ohio focusing on digital fabrication and disaster relief. July 3rd Guest Speaker bios:

Flávia Bastos received her Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1999. She is a Distinguished Professor in the Arts and Humanities at the University of Cincinnati.  Her research and teaching are rooted in the community and are indebted to her Brazilian roots. Her many awards include the 2009 Ziegfeld Award of the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA) and the Mary J. Flávia Bastos

James P. Buchanan is Director Emeritus at the Brueggeman Center for Dialogue at Xavier University and President of the Foreign Leadership Council. He was educated at Yale University and University of Chicago where he received his Ph.D. in comparative religions and value systems. He also attended the Sorbonne in Paris, The University of Moscow and the University of Beijing. His teaching and research have focused on ethics, global systems and interfaith dialogue. Jeanetta Darno

Iris Roley was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Iris is a wife of 23 years to Jesse Roley, a mother of 3, and grandmother of 5. Iris is the proud partner of RoSho Awards & Graphics, the only Black Owned engraving company in the region. Her company provides promotional items, awards, trophies, plaques, custom apparel and signage for the past 15 years. Iris is an original member of the Cincinnati Black United Front. As the Project Manager for the CBUF, in November 2000, Iris implemented a plan of action to address the wrongful deaths of two unarmed black men by the Cincinnati Police Department. Iris and the CBUF led the effort to mobilize the Cincinnati African American community to report, collect, and document over 400 instances of police brutality and misconduct.
